Rate-splitting multiple-access allows one to use single-user coding/decoding techniques to achieve any rate tuple that lies inside the capacity region of an asynchronous multiple-access channel. We introduce rate-splitting multiple-access for the 2-user Gaussian multiple-access channel and then consider a general 2-user discrete memoryless multiple-access channel. Both cases generalize to M-users.
