It is the official policy of the Emilia Romagna region in Italy to avoid the institutionalisation of the aging population and of people with disabilities. One of the strategies that has been adopted is to actively promote the independence and the quality of life of these citizens in their home environments. The regional government has developed and implemented a comprehensive programme called “Casa Amica” (Friendly Home), to ensure that elderly citizens and citizens with disabilities have access to information and advice concerning home environment accessibility and liveability. Part of the programme is concerned with the establishment of a network of local resource Centres where people can receive information and advice concerning the adaptation of their daily life environment.
