The authors have been studying a conscious module called Module of Nerves for Advanced Dynamics (MoNAD), which is the core of a conscious robot. The functions of a MoNAD satisfy the qualification requirements for human consciousness. A MoNAD is not a simple first-order reaction system but a redundant second-order system. Each MoNAD has two recursive neural networks that cross each other. One of the two recursive neural networks of the MoNADs processes information on the real world while the other performs high-level abstraction. Neurons present at the intersection of the two neural networks connect the real and the abstract (i.e., represented) world by synchronizing them. Playing the role of mirror neurons, these neurons provide a clue to solving the problem of symbol grounding. A MoNAD is a representation-driven machine. A MoNAD can also describe the function of self-awareness. Each MoNAD has two sets of input and output terminals to function as a bi-directional information network. A sophisticated system can be constructed by incorporating multiple MoNADs in the network. We call such an advanced system a ‘conscious system’ as a high order cybernetics.
