Abstract

In this paper, we give an introduction to the basic data storage and access techniques which have been used and evolved over several decades in High Energy Physics. We further relate the science data handling workflow to more recent “Big Data” trends outside of science. The paper concludes with an outlook on upcoming technology changes and their potential impact on scientific data systems.
