We discuss issues which are standing in the way of disabled students getting good educational and career opportunities in scientific and technological fields. We then investigate ways in which an adaptive, multi-modal “smart workplace” could alleviate some of these problems. Focusing on issues relating to accessibility of mathematical content, we discuss some previous approaches before introducing our own system, TalkMaths, as a case study.
