The European participation in the next step fusion energy research project, ITER, is very broad with interests from all EU member states. To support the needed physics understanding and predictive capability for ITER discharges, a strong need to promote modelling technologies and access to computing resources on a pan-European basis exists. The EUFORIA project, EU Fusion for ITER Applications, sets out to support these needs by creating an e-Science environment, building on the existing European infrastructure and middleware environments and specifically introducing the developments towards a modelling platform for fusion being advanced within the European fusion community. The aim is to advance the physics modelling capability for ITER on a broadened European Scale. The EUFORIA approach and its different components are discussed here.
