In 1993, Bossert, Mahr and Heilig proposed a cryptographic scheme based on error-correcting codes that provides simultaneously error correction and message authentication. They also sketched out an idea how the proposed scheme to be analyzed. Elaborating on this idea, we reveal an weakness in a concrete implementation which can be exploited by active intruder to launch an attack with considerable probability of success. Countermeasures against this probabilistic attack are given.
