DIABCARD, a project sponsored by the European Union, has developed the core of a Chip card Based Medical Information System for chronic diseases in ambulatory and hospital care. This includes the specifications for the software (operating system on the chip card, interface between chip card and application, the application at the GP, at the lab, etc.) as well as for the hardware (processor and the memory of the chip card, data structure, security functions, system architecture). It is now at the testing stage. This paper shows the approach of the project, the benefits expected and the results achieved up-to-date.
