Commercially available force sensors were investigated with respect to their applicability as force transducers to measure grasping and pinching forces during hand strength evaluation procedures. The sensors investigated were force sensitive resistors, ultrasonic force sensors and miniature strain gauges. The ultrasonic force sensor was found to have the most suitable statical and dynamical characteristics for our application. Electronic pinchmeter and J-mar dynamometer were also investigated as the devices currently used for evaluation of grip and pinch strength. A virtual reality graphics simulation was constructed in order to experiment with hand evaluation procedures.
