Image enhancement has been demonstrated to improve face recognition and increase reading speed in the visually impaired. Previous studies used still, monochrome (black and white) images processed off line. We are now able to apply the adaptive enhancement algorithm in real time to color video movie segments and scrolled text. Low vision patients with central vision loss were evaluated using either moving video segments or scrolled text. Subjects had a subjective appreciation for the enhanced video, as well as measurable improvement in perception of information such as facial expression and fine scene details. However, subjects from this same patient population showed no statistically significant increase in reading speed for similarly enhanced text. The latter result is in contrast to previous studies.
