The aim of the PACS-IMACS project was to evaluate the results of the introduction of PACS, Picture Archiving and Communication System, in the hospital environment and to guide its evolution towards an IMACS, Image Management and Communication System, concept. Nowadays, PACS technology is available on the market and our first objective was to evaluate and assess the available installations at the relevant pilot sites.
A characterization study was carried out to identify users and needs. The main aspects of a possible connection of PACS to HIS, Hospital Information System, were considered for bi-directional data exchange. Particular emphasis was devoted to diagnostic image presentation in order to verify its clinical validity and define a common technical baseline.
Furthermore, experiments on sophisticated image processing and presentation, and advanced communications platforms were performed to explore new diagnostic possibilities. Results and experiences gathered during the project will be used to set up a knowledge base to manage and enhance the technology required for the implementation of IMAC systems, which could possibly be interconnected via metropolitan area networks.
