Abstract

Balancing risk and reliability engineers have to take variability of soil properties into account within the design process.Reliability based design offers a scientific base, which is explained exemplarily within the evaluation of the tunnel face stability. Within this framework, the variability of soil, geometry and construction process is considered in a comprehensive way. Parametric studies enlighten the evaluation of the failure probability and help to understand this concept via showing the influence of the different sources of variability.
