In the paper a novel design of a single phase AC motor is proposed. The presented design is developed from an existing shaded pole induction motor produced in an assembly-line. Instead of a standard squirrel cage rotor, by simple operation, a barium-ferrite permanent magnet is inserted. No other actions are undertaken. The gained contribution is an improvement of the overall motor performance, including the manufacturing and operating characteristics. Both the reference induction motor and the new designed permanent magnet motor are studied. The most relevant steady-state characteristics are calculated and presented comparatively in figures and tables. The preliminary results are promising.
