Patient-centeredness is crucial for delivering high-quality healthcare by aligning care with patient perspectives and preferences. However, current healthcare systems often fail to adequately meet the needs of patients, resulting in diminished healthcare outcomes and dissatisfaction. This paper examines the integration of patient-centered approaches in developing and implementing patient pathways, a tool frequently used as a cornerstone of health information systems to support the planning and management of the care process. Through a systematic review of 2.342 papers in PubMed, this study uncovers a landscape of fragmented, unstructured, and inconsistent guidance for incorporating patient-centeredness into patient pathways. In response to this issue, the paper advocates adopting more structured and consistent patient-centered strategies for designing and implementing patient pathways, improving outcomes, and optimizing resource allocation.
