In order to use an instrument cross-culturally it has to be translated into language of its use. In this paper the approaches, strategies and procedures for translating instruments for cross- cultural research and use in nursing are reviewed. Validation of the translations is best done by following the suggested procedures of translating, back translating, reviewing, pilot testing and testing of psychometric properties. Implications for translating ICNP (International Classification for Nursing Practice, ICN) are suggested.
