Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) may include a combustion engine which operates associated with an electric generator. The electric generator converts the mechanical energy produced by the combustion engine into electric energy, which is converted with AC – DC transducer to DC voltage and stored in the batteries or super capacitors or used directly in driving motors of HEV. For such applications, a compact, high performance electric machine is required. This paper proposes axial-flux permanent magnet machines for such applications. As a prototype, a 120 kW permanent magnet generator is constructed. The generator type is a double sided axial-flux permanent magnet generator (AFPMG) with the internal PM disk rotor.
