It utilizes a qualitative research approach to delve into the dynamics, frameworks, and trajectories of digital transformation in this sector. The study underscores the importance of agile management, with its emphasis on rapid iterations, self-organizing teams, and a strong focus on customer value, as a critical factor for businesses to adapt to digital advancements effectively. The concept of digital transformation is scrutinized as the process of integrating digital technologies into all business facets, aiming to improve efficiency and customer experiences. The research highlights two main drivers of digital transformation: the reconfiguration of the value chain and the enhancement of digitization capabilities. A five-stage model of digital maturity is presented, outlining the evolution from initial digital activities to a comprehensive digital ecosystem. The transformation journey is identified as taking one of several potential routes: conservative, breakthrough, incremental, or leapfrogging approaches. The case of Bijie Tobacco Business is examined, demonstrating its progression towards becoming a data-centric and innovative enterprise. The company’s strategic focus is on building a digital core and leveraging data as a key resource while nurturing a supportive digital ecosystem.
