This paper presents the current situation of intercultural communication research in China and Japan in terms of the publications, theoretical constructs, the activities of the Institute and the configuration of intercultural communication courses. The purpose is to identify the strengths and weaknesses in comparison, and then to explore feasible approaches for the development of intercultural communication research in China. It is found that China can further promote the research in this field by increasing funding for theoretical research, introducing classic original works, involving professionals in translation and encouraging multidisciplinary and sustainable development.
