One paramount aspect to deal with the increase in the amount of plastic are urban planning policies to efficiently collect plastic waste. However, only developed countries have well-defined policies despite the serious problems this type of waste generally causes. The present paper proposes a novel approach to define urban planning policies able to automatically infer the number of bins required in an urban area based on socio-economic and demographic factors. This is done by analysing open data from several Western cities. The solution has been evaluated in two urban areas of India and the Philippines showing quite consistent results.
