Geotechnical risk management and levee safety assessments have a lot in common: both focus on risk management. Monitoring can provide insight into geotechnical behaviour of structures and surroundings. Monitoring therefore is therefore valuable to map and manage possible risks. However, pitfalls in the application of monitoring are often not recognized. Often these pitfalls relate to technical aspects and communication and understanding of risks. This paper addresses these two aspects: proper application of monitoring as part of geotechnical risk management and visualization of risks aiming to improve the decision-making process.
