A small number of experiments with smart cards in the health care sector take place in Greece. In general, these experiments are led by various individual research institutions without co-ordination. They are mostly financed either by the European Union or by the Greek Ministry of Research and Technology and their main goal is gaining of experience. Smart card projects focused on applications in primary health care, chronic diseases care (diabetes and cancer) and telemedicine. Recently, emphasis is being placed on the emergency card. As a result there is Greek participation in the consortium CARDLINK-2 from the National Technical University of Athens, Municipality of Amaroussion and State Children Hospital of Pendeli. The Greek Health Authorities (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Social Security) have expressed considerable interest in the results of the aforementioned research efforts. A national initiative has been launched for introducing a National Health Insurance Card which initially is going to cover health insurance requirements for civil servants.
