The main cause of fire, accounting for more than 50% of fires, is leaving cooking unattended. The elderly are particularly vulnerable in this respect, and in addition may suffer stress from worrying about whether or not they have left the cooker on. This paper describes a device that uses a very low resolution (8-pixel), thermopile array that is scanned across the kitchen to detect the presence of heat sources. An associated PIR sensor is used to detect whether the occupant is present in the kitchen and a warning sound can be generated when the occupant leaves the kitchen while cooking is in progress, or if they have left cooking unattended for an undesirable length of time.
