This paper proposes an elliptical gear tooth root transaction curve to enhance the tooth bending performance. The proposed ellipse profile is designed to tangent to flank profile to replace the traditional fillet transaction curve of a gear tooth root. The bending strength of the gear tooth with elliptical transaction curve is investigated and compared with the strength of a gear tooth with standard design. In this work, the maximum root stress is calculated by ISO model and AGMA model. The moment is loaded on the Highest Point of Single Tooth Contact and the force is normal to involute profile. The effect with different coefficient of bottom clearance is studied and results demonstrated that the proposed elliptical teeth increase the strength in gear root. The contact strength of tooth surface remains unchanged since the carrying involute is unmodified. The elliptical design is particularly suitable in gears with small number of teeth and the designed elliptical curve gear can replace the standard gears without any alteration.
