In recent years, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the German Medical Technology (MT) sector have been facing a strong competition from low-wage countries developing, manufacturing, and distributing high-quality products on a global scale. For this reason, the need for carefully-designed Supply Chain Management (SCM) policies to create more value for their customers while reducing operating cost has become a priority. The aim of this paper is to explore SCM issues faced by practitioners and to report on best practices by using an exploratory research with a multiple case study approach and insights gained from 14 case organisations. This study contributes to the field of healthcare operations management with a tailor-made assessment tool, which is strengthened by the number of replications of this study. The findings offer new priorities for management practice to consider, particularly if they are contemplating a re-engineering of their SCM strategies.
