In addition to the use that terrorists have been making of the Internet for a variety of purposes and ends, there are also a number of cyber-criminal organisations doing likewise. These groups, which we refer to as “cyber-fronts”, organise in support of terrorist groups, and have members who are very active on the Internet. Political motivations ensure the need for these groups to survive and to continue to grow online. They will continue to use the Internet to their advantage, in particular the opportunity it affords to remain anonymous – one of the biggest motivators for these groups to devote such time to Internet activities. This chapter suggests that Internet forensics is a powerful tool against such highly active cyber-fronts, and argues that the use thereof would add another significant dimension to the way investigations are currently conducted.
