The mortality of acute ischemic stroke has been ranking the top three in the causes of death in Taiwan since the latest 20 years. Recently, the demarcation of ischemic penumbra areas during emergency treatment is usually carried out by manual delineation through visual inspection, suffering from poor inter-rater reliability and time-consuming. Therefore, this study developed a method to automatically derive ischemic penumbra areas by using image registration and segmentation techniques. The registration accuracy of 88.8% was achieved and the segmentation of ischemic penumbra was evaluated by comparing with expert's determination, revealing no significant difference. With the aid of that, clinicians can efficiently obtain a reliable index for the diagnoses and treatment of acute stroke.
