Introduction Monitoring technology may be one of the key solutions to achieve a more efficient health care system and to allow elderly people to live longer independently. The use of monitoring technology may allow timely and well targeted interventions to intercept potential crises by detecting changes in health status. This is necessary as solutions are needed to deal with the growing complex care demand of elderly people. Aim Obtaining insight in which monitoring technologies exist, what the characteristics are and what is known about the outcomes by performing a systematic electronic document search. Methods A systematic electronic document search was performed in scientific databases and Google Scholar. Articles were included when reporting on monitoring technologies that detect activity of elderly people in the home environment with the aim of prolonging independent living. Results Results of the review on characteristics, purposes and reported outcomes of monitoring technology are presented in this paper.
