Power wheelchairs are an expensive yet essential form of assistive technology that can compensate for impaired mobility and improve quality of life for older adults. In this paper we provide an overview of the work of CanWheel, a Canadian research team dedicated to improving the mobility opportunities of older adults who use power wheelchairs. Through a program of research involving five individual studies, this team is addressing three basic questions: 1) How are power wheelchairs used now?, 2) How can power wheelchairs be used better?, and 3) How can power wheelchairs be better?. A brief summary of the status of this research is provided.
This study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (AMG 100925). Salary/scholarship funds were provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (PWR).
