Development of Input Device of Electric Wheelchair Considering the Characteristic of the Hand Function of Person with Severe Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Persons with the severe Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) cannot operate the electric wheelchairs because of lack of muscular power and deformation of hand. To deal with this difficulty, the authors developed two new input devices. These devices were developed based on the evaluation of the hand function of persons with severe DMD. Thus these devices can be operated by slight force and movement of their fingers. Furthermore the shape of these devices is determined by considering the shape of the hands of persons with severe DMD.
