This paper describes CARE, a knowledge-based system prototype for assisting in real-time the medical doctor in the patient management process. CARE (Clinical Advice and Record Entry) is a computer program aimed at providing methodological feed-back and advice at each step of patient management, and making available a recording approach focussed not only on data but also on clinical problems and medical decisions. The actual utility of CARE is threefold: first, used on-line as a decision aid it may improve physician performance in the real clinical context; second, it can be used as an educational tool to train students in clinical methodology; and third, on the base of its recording facilities it can provide well assessed objective decision-mapping databases which might be very useful in evaluating the performance of individual users and in collecting statistical informations about doctor's behaviour.
