The paper presents an oxygen status model (OSM) for simulation of major respiratory and circulatory malfunctions and the effect of ventilatory or hemodynamic medical intervention. The OSM includes a model of a ventilator and the human respiratory and circulatory systems, implemented as a causal probabilistic network (CPN). The CPN representation makes OSM able to consider uncertainties during simulation. OSM was tested as a simulation tool on two fictive cardiovascular or ventilatory disease states. The results demonstrate the potential of the OSM with respect to simulation of disease states and their treatments.
