In the mid‐1980s, the UK government established several initiatives to encourage and enhance biotechnology education in schools. 20 years later, only one project, the National Centre for Biotechnology Education (NCBE), remains. It has however, an international reputation and reach. What lessons can be learnt from the English experience, and could it provide a model for other initiatives?
