Objective. The Sataesteetön project responds to the needs of a society and supports everyone to have an independent and unrestricted life in every stage of their life. Yyteri for all is part of this project and its objective is to examine and develop accessibility and increase participation in the area of the Yyteri beach in Pori, Finland. This research presents the ways of developing windsurfing suitable for persons surfing in the seated position.

Main content. Adapted windsurfing pilot course was organized on summer 2010 at the Yyteri Surfcentre. The purpose of the pilot course was to create and modify appropriate equipment for surfing in a seated position and to test these modifications for wheelchair users. Equipment modifications are necessary when surfing in the seated position. Moreover, there were safety rules that also needed to be taken into consideration.

Results. The modification started by building a seat for the board. The chair was attached to the board by strapping it to the footstraps of the board. Position of the surfer causes also difficulties that were needed to be solved, due to the fact that when surfing in the seated position, the center of gravity is at the level of the head or shoulders. In adapted windsurfing, as in any other sports, safety comes first. This is why the raiser for the rig needed to be modified. When the rig falls into the water, the mast should not crush the surfers' legs. Trying to avoid this, we came up with another problem: the boom is way too high for having a good control on the rig. This problem was solved with few bars and clamps which allowed to attach another boom under the other one.

Conclusion. These modifications increase the opportunities of physical activity for people with disability. The accessibility was enhanced by supplying and building up new equipments. The next step will be to develop a seat specifically made for windsurfing and making already existing components lighter and better. Equal participation in sports and physical activities needs combination of various skills, competences and knowledge. Among the external professionals, the knowledge and perspective of the users plays important role.
