The changing environment of healthcare and the increasing reliance on technology to drive and evaluate change requires efficient tools to assess and educate nursing leadership on the skills necessary to succeed in their leadership roles. Using the Nursing Informatics Competencies for Nurse Leaders (NICA-NL) Scale as an example, this chapter will explore how such a tool can be implemented and provide value to healthcare organizations, as well as advance nursing practice.
The scope of nursing informatics practice has been evolving over the course of the last 5 decades, expanding to address the needs of health care organizations and in response to the evolution of technology. In parallel, the educational preparation of nursing informatics specialists has become more formalized and shaped by the requisite competencies of the role. In this chapter, the authors describe the evolution of nursing informatics roles, scope and focus of practice, and anticipated role responsibilities and opportunities for the future. Further, implications and considerations for the future are presented.

Nursing informatics competencies are constantly changing in response to advances in the health information technology (HIT) industry and research emerging from the fields of nursing and health informatics. In this paper we build off the work of Staggers and colleagues in defining nursing informatics competencies at five levels: the beginning nurse, the experienced nurse, the nursing informatics specialist, the nursing informatics innovator and the nursing informatics researcher in the area of HIT safety. The work represents a significant contribution to the literature in the area of nursing informatics competency development as it extends nursing informatics competencies to include those focused on the area of technology-induced errors and HIT safety.
In this book it is of course impossible to be complete on all competencies publications, or all relevant subjects. For that reason the Post Conference Team decided to have some pages of the book reserved for annotations. An annotation is seen as a short reference to another topic or publication, not included in this book, and a brief motivation from one of us, why this might be of interest to the readers.
